First Steps You Need to Complete Before Buying a Home

September 30, 2021

Deciding you want to buy a home is a big decision. Home buying takes a lot of careful planning and organization to navigate the sometimes complex process. Before you jump into the home buying process, there are a few early steps you should take to make the process easier for you.

Connect With a Real Estate Agent

The best thing you can do at the beginning of your home buying process is to connect with a real estate agent. An agent is your advocate throughout the entire process and will help make sure you find the right house for you. Your agent will help you understand what you can afford and show you the best properties for your budget. In addition, your real estate agent can help you when it comes to the negotiation process by getting you the best deal possible on your new home. If a home you are interested in needs repairs, your agent can ask the seller on your behalf to agree to make them.

Find a Mortgage Lender

Another important step to take before buying a home is finding a mortgage lender. A mortgage lender is a bank or other financial institution that will grant you a loan to buy a house. There are different types of mortgage lenders, but all will have specific requirements borrowers need to meet, including having a good credit score. All mortgage lenders must be licensed to do business in their state. Mortgage lenders often require a fee for their services, so be sure to factor that in when you go to work with one.

Save For a Down Payment

Saving for a down payment is another important step to take before you go looking at homes. Depending on what your mortgage lender has approved you for, you may need to have a down payment as small as 3% or as high as 20%. If you qualify for a VA loan or a USDA loan, you may be able to put 0% down. The more money you put down as a down payment will help make your mortgage payments lower and can save you money on interest. Figuring out how much to save for a down payment also depends on how much you want to spend on a house.

Buying a home can be a complex process that is hard to navigate. There are a number of steps you can take early on in the home buying process to relieve some of the stress. This early planning will make it easier for you to find the perfect home.
