When to Organize and Clean Out Your Home

February 22, 2022

Everyday chores and weekly cleaning can keep your home looking nice, but every once in a while you need to do a major clean-out. This can involve taking everything out of a room, including closets and cabinets, doing a deep clean, and then reorganizing. A deep clean should happen periodically no matter what, but especially when certain life events come up.

When Winter Ends

Spring cleaning may seem like an old-fashioned idea, but it’s actually as relevant as ever. Your house has been closed up all winter with dust settling in the corners and crevices. There’s no time like a sunny spring day to tackle the big cleaning tasks in each room of your house. First, you’ll need to declutter and get rid of things you no longer need or use. Then, vacuum and clean floors and walls, window sills, baseboards, and heating vents. Window hangings should also be cleaned or washed. In the kitchen, empty the refrigerator and clean and disinfect it inside.

When Moving

When you start packing to move, you’ll truly find out what is valuable to you and what is not. Start with the basement, garage, and closets you don’t use much. Make three piles: take with you, donate or sell, and throw away. You’ll likely take several trips to your local thrift shop for donations. A yard sale can also help clear away items. When you start to pack, try to go room by room. Labeling your boxes helps keep you organized during your move. Once you arrive at your new home, there will be certain items you need right away, and you’ll need to know which boxes they are in.

When You Remodel

Whether you’re painting, getting new flooring, or doing a major remodel, you’ll want to take the opportunity to deep clean and reorganize your room. The process of remodeling often creates dust that settles on everything in the room, including walls and furniture. Don’t forget the closets.

Your newly-remodeled look will also give you an opportunity to re-envision the room layout, clean up clutter, and put everything in order. If your old furniture looks drab, consider replacing it with pieces that offer additional storage.

A clean and organized home can relieve stress and make your life easier all around. You can also enjoy the health benefits of cleaning out accumulated dust, dirt, and allergens. Take advantage of times in your life to do a major clean-up.
